About The Club | Chew Valley RFC In March 1969 a group of former Chew Valley pupils met at The Pelican in Chew Magna to form Chew Valley Old Boys Rugby Football Club and with the support of the Headmaster matches were played at Chew Valley School on the top pitch and this arrangement continued until 1978. Under the Chairmanship of Peter Markham a lease was secured on Lobbingtons, where the club is now based, planning permission for change of use to playing fields and car parking was secured and the facility was formally opened with a match against Bristol Old Players with the use of the changing rooms at the school continuing. The funds necessary to achieve this development were raised by the players including Peter Townson and Andrew Tanner who are still involved with the modern club through running outside bars at local village halls at discos promoted by George Williams who was raising funds to develop Bishop Sutton Football club. This could not have happened without the the assistance of John and Joan Wedlock, licensees of the Yew Tree Chew Stoke which was the base for the club at the time although not having a clubhouse meant The Queens , Pelican and Bear and Swan hosted after match and the Druids at Stanton Drew after training until the present clubhouse was opened in August 1997. League rugby saw Chew Valley Old Boys placed in Somerset 2 which replaced the informal arrangements that made improving the quality of fixtures difficult for newly formed clubs. When Andrew Tanner, the Chairman at the time started junior rugby in August 1994 and the Chew Valley Cats womens rugby team committed to using Lobbingtons, a lottery bid was successful and a clubhouse was a reality. Further investment in full pitch drainage and floodlighting of the training pitch funded by bar income with the clubhouse extended to accommodate our thriving junior section and the improved standard of league rugby. Successive promotions over the last 10 years sees Chew Valley Rugby Club (renamed as a condition of Lottery funding) playing at one level below National League status with two other senior mens teams, a senior womens team and junior boys and girls at all age groups. Chew Valley Rugby Club is at the heart of the local community and is well supported by local businesses which is key to continued maintenance and improvement of the facilities. |
