With Major League Rugby in full swing, we were lucky enough to have a chat with Alain Hydardet, the Head Coach of the Austin Elite Rugby team currently taking part in their inaugural MLR season.

After Week 4, Austin Elite Rugby are sitting bottom of the MLR standings, with just the one win from their first 4 games. The squad includes Todd Clever, USA Rugby legend as well as 20 times capped Springbok Pedrie Wannenburg as well as the MLR current top try scorer Hanco Germishuys.

Fill Your Boots – How was the Major League Rugby experience been so far?

Alain Hydaredt – It has been amazing so far, being a part of something new is always great especially when we know that it can have such a big impact on the sport in just a few years.

FYB – With just one win but most tries scored so far, do you think you are where you should be in the standings?

AT – We are lucky to have Hanco Germishuys in the team, he is the player who scored the more tries in the League so far, but rugby is a team sport so everybody need to work hard to get another victory. Of course we would like to move up in the standings, nobody wants to be last but this is the results of our games.

FYB – What effect does a player like Todd Clever have on a young squad?

AH – Having someone as experienced as Todd is a great advantage for the team because he can give advices to our young players and help them achieve their goals.

FYB – Other than winning the Championship, what constitutes success for this inaugural season?

AH – Of course winning the Championship will be the best achievement but deserving this victory is an even better feeling because all the hard work will be paying off.

We thank Alain and the Austin Elite Rugby outfit for their time and wish them all the best for the upcoming rounds of the inaugural Major League Rugby season.
